Black History Month

The month of October is 'Black History Month' in the UK and we took the opportunity to observe Black History Month and reflect on the history , impact and achievements of Black people both here in Britain; and in other parts of the world. Black History month is particularly significant because it is important to remember the sacrifices and struggles that those before us made which have resulted in where we are today; a position in which we are able to integrate and celebrate all races and cultures. We can now take these accomplishments and use them as motivation to achieve and strive for more. It is important to consider the vast range of histories which contribute to our world and to honor and celebrate them..

Students had the opportunity to consider various successful Black British personalities including musicians, comedians, news reporters and athletes and discuss what they achieved and why it is significant. In addition to this students had the opportunity to research an artist of their choosing and to respond accordingly. Below is an example of a response to artist Jacob Lawrence and his work based on how slaves from the south of America migrated north in search for a better life.

We look forward to continuing to celebrate diversity throughout the rest of the year,
