About the Classroom

Simmons House Classroom is the education provision for Simmons House Adolescent Unit.

The classroom work closely with Simmons House multi-disciplinary team to provide short or long-term individual learning plans for each young person during their inpatient admission.

Education is provided for KS3, 4 & 5, with a focus on maintaining progress, developing emotional literacy, and where appropriate, developing functional literacy and numeracy.

Simmons House Classroom also provides vocational courses in areas such as cooking, hair & beauty and horticulture.

Classroom Schedule

Session 1:  10.00-10.45

Break:  10.45-11.00

Session 2:  11.00-11.45

Additional targeted support sessions: 13.15-14.00

The classroom is a calm and focused space where students can continue with their studies or discover new interests with the support of the teaching team. Students have a wide range of experiences of school, college or work before coming to Simmons House and everyone is working at different levels.

Young people’s health and wellbeing are central to any school work, as expressed in the core values we strive to uphold and promote as a school community:

Care

Connection

Resilience

Each young person will have their own learning programme to help them make the most of their time here and we will help them begin to think about what they might do after their time here. The classroom is a registered exam centre and students can sit their exams here.  Students can access additional targeted learning time one-to-one with staff in the afternoons when appropriate.

The curriculum is as unique, varied and creative as our pupils.  We aim to provide whatever is best for the learner and we will try to accommodate any particular interests and talents students may have.  In addition to subjects students may have already tried at school, they might want to try new subjects like photography, music technology, film making, animation, mechanics, web design, make-up design, touch typing, driving theory or money management. There is a strong arts programme and many students often try learning a new instrument or experiment with new arts or craft skills.

We see engagement with education in the widest sense as fundamental to recovery.  The classroom works closely with the nurses, doctors and therapists at Simmons House and with a wide range of professionals in the community.

Ofsted inspected Haringey Learning Partnership (then known as Haringey Tuition Centre) together with the classroom at Simmons House in April 2018. The report can be viewed on the Ofsted website: www.ofsted.gov.uk.

The report notes that 'the quality of education at Simmons House continues to be outstanding.'
