Black History Month 2019

It's Black History Month in the UK, and it’s normally marked by lessons in schools and events across the country. But there's some disagreement over how the subject should be discussed and taught. Is it time for a rethink on how we recognise black achievement?

This month in the classroom we have been looking at different opinions and considering our own views on the topic,

"Should Black History Month be Kept, Renamed or Scrapped?"

Most students have been able to engage with the topic in some way, whether that's through discussion, debate, reading, listening, writing, watching a video or completing a related literacy task. Below you'll find some of the media that has informed our thinking, and some of the activities we have done to help develop our ideas and communication skills.

Black History Matters | Don John | TEDxSouthampton (2016)
