Black History is NOW

Over a series of lessons we worked as a group to explore ideas around Black History and how it is, can be, or should be marked.

SHOULD BLACK HISTORY MONTH EXIST?

We questioned if having one month dedicated to Black History is appropriate. Students agreed that in an ideal world, Black History would simply be incorporated into our general study and discussion of "History," however until such a time as this becomes the norm, it is better to have one month than none.

SHOULD OTHER MINORITY ETHNICITIES BE INCLUDED IN BHM?

Young people found this a challenging question, as they were able to see the validity of both views. Most students felt that Black History should be Black History, but that all ethnicities' contributions to history ought to be acknowledged and honoured equally.

WHAT WE MADE....

Through student-led discussion and artistic endeavour our theme emerged. Initially, we weren't sure what we were setting out to communicate. Students chose images they felt were relevant to BHM, looking both at the past and present, within the UK and off-shore. Over the collage process the theme became clear. Although different events occur, the impact of historical attitudes, decisions and actions continue to impact and pervade our experiences in the present - HISTORY IS NOW.
