Academic Stretch - Intermediate Maths Challenge

For some of us, being given 3 pages of maths problems feels like being asked to read a foreign language, but for others, this challenge is FUN!

Our talented and very determined mathematicians have begun preparing for the Intermediate Maths Challenge, an annual inter-school competition held each year in February.

The challenge invites participants to try to solve 25 VERY difficult maths problems in 60 minutes without the help of a calculator. To further test the young people's mathematical confidence, incorrect answers for questions 16-25 will be penalised with a LOSS of marks - this is meaner than GCSE and A Level!

Here are some questions for you to try:

What is the value of 1 - 0.2 + 0.03 - 0.004?

A 0.826, B 0.834, C 0.926, D 1.226, E 1.234

(5 marks)

A football is made by sewing together 12 black pentagonal panels and 20 white hexagonal panels. There is a join wherever two panels meet along an edge. How many joins are there?

A 20, B 32, C 60, D 90, E 180.

Note: This question is worth 6 marks, but you'll have 2 points deducted if you get this one wrong!
